Alan's Weather - 10/26/11

Starting with Tuesday's high temperatures. It ranged from as low as 63 at Wrightstown, Burlington County to as high as 67 in Atlantic City International Airport.

Today's temperatures will be a touch milder because I think we'll have variable clouds and some sunshine today with a few highs from 67 to perhaps 72. I've taken out just the chance of a shower. I think anybody that mentions it is crazy, so I didn't put it in my forecast for today.

Tonight's a different story. There will be showers developing during the hours after midnight and some lows will be in the mid 40s to low 50s, but closer to 60 along the south coastal communities.

And as we expected, there will be some rain for Thursday with statewide highs from 52 to 62.

Sunshine comes back Friday with highs just in the 50s.

And it looks as though a storm system will be developing in the southeastern states and come close enough to us Saturday to bring us some wind and rain. But that will be gone in time to salvage a nice Sunday.

Tuesday, October 25, 2011

Alan's Weather - 10/25/11

Highest temperatures Monday reached 63 to 66, just a shade above the normal high of 62 to 64.

Today, we'll have lots of sunshine and mostly sunny with a brisk wind, though. Highs will be in the low to middle 60s, just a shade above the normal high for this time of the year.

We'll have clear to partly cloudy skies for the night ahead with some 40s for lows, but low 50s near the ocean.

Tomorrow, there is just the slight chance of a brief shower, but more than likely not with variable clouds and maybe some sun. Highs will be in the mid 60s to perhaps just a shade over 70 in southern New Jersey.

Then a disturbance riding the jet stream will bring some likely rain on Thursday with highs statewide from 53 to 63. Although, there's some sign that it could be milder than that in far southern New Jersey for Thursday afternoon.

Friday looks okay, and then we'll have to wait and see if we have a storm threat for Saturday. Some of the models are diverging on this idea, but I'm kinda leaning towards the idea of a storm creating rain and wind for Saturday.

Sunday looks okay from here.

Alan's Weather - 10/24/11

The weekend forecast worked out reasonably well. It was in the low to middle 60s both days. Yesterday, for example, Atlantic City reached 65, 61 in Trenton and Wrightstown, Burlington County. The normal high is 63 or 64 now, so we were within range of normal for this time of the year.

Today, we'll have clouds and some sun, but variable clouds. The risk of a scattered shower comes into the picture probably after the day is over, not until this evening or the first part of the night. A few scattered light showers are possible, and then we'll have some clearing during the early morning hours later tonight. Highs today in the 60, while lows tonight will be in the 40s, but perhaps a few 30s are possible in a few of the coolest spots.

There will be a gusty wind tomorrow with sunshine, and lots of it. Temperatures will be in the low to middle 60s Tuesday afternoon.

Wednesday may have the risk of some showers once again, as the next weather system arrives.

We have a new tropical storm, Rina, the 17th of the season down in the Caribbean. It may drift around for a while before coming to the Yucatan Channel in the many days ahead.

Friday, October 21, 2011

Alan's Weekend Weather - 10/21/11

It only reached the low to middle 60s yesterday. Today will be no better than the low 60s as sunshine mixes with patchy clouds and a brisk wind, but not as much wind as yesterday.

A clear to partly cloudy night ahead with some lows in the mid 30s to low 40s, but upper 40s to around 50 south coast.

A partly sunny Saturday and Sunday await. Saturday's highs will be in the low 60s, and low to perhaps mid 60s for Sunday.

The National Weather Service has indicated a perhaps cold and snowy winter in their preliminary winter outlook.

They base it on a couple of things:
1. La Nina, which is present now and often makes southern storm tracks and coastal storms for New Jersey and the northeast.

2. Also, the Arctic Oscillation, or the North Atlantic Oscillation. If it's negative more than positive, it may have a detrimental effect on our winter.

We will have to wait and see.

Alan's Weather - 10/19/11

Well quite simply, the rain today that occurs in New Jersey can be heavy at times, enough that there can be areas that have between 1 and 2 inches of rain when all is said and done later tonight.

Now, that will hopefully not cause any concern other than minor flooding on roadways. Hopefully, streams, rivers, and creeks will be able to handle the rainfall, and we think it will. There will also be tidal flooding at the times of high tide early this afternoon along the oceanfront and later in the back bays.

Many temperatures will be just in the 60s. And some rain and showers will be around tonight with lows from 58 up to 67.

Windy tomorrow, but this time from the southwest. Dry, patchy clouds and sunshine with most highs Thursday in the upper 60s.

And partly sunny and breezy Friday, but cooler with some highs Friday only in the lower 60s.

That's probably where we will be, in the low to mid 60s, over the weekend with some sunshine. The weekend still looks fine from here.

Tuesday, October 18, 2011

Alan's Weather - 10/18/11

Highest temperatures yesterday reached 73 in Atlantic City, but a little bit cooler elsewhere with mainly in the upper 60s to near 70.

Today, with sunshine and patchy clouds, highs will be in the low to perhaps middle 70s this afternoon. It'll be a bit cooler near the ocean.

It'll cloud up in the night ahead. Watch for the chance of some rain late with statewide lows from 53 to 63.

A storm system will be coming up the East Coast tomorrow, and that means wind and rain. Some of the rain will be heavy at times. The winds will increase to 20 to 35 with higher gusts, especially along the coastline.

Some highs for Wednesday may not be out of the 60s. Rain may start tapering off by evening or at night.

I indicated just the chance of a shower early Thursday. I easily could have left that out of the forecast. Otherwise, partly sunny with a brisk wind and highs in the upper 60s Thursday afternoon.

And Friday and the weekend, look okay as of now.

Monday, October 17, 2011

Alan's Weather - 10/17/11

The weekend worked out pretty much as expected. Temperatures were maybe just a shade above what I predicted, which was well into the 60s. Yesterday, it reached 72 in Atlantic City, 70 in Newark Liberty Airport; just a shade above my upper 60s that I predicted for Sunday.

Today, we'll have temperatures that will be at or just a shade above 70 after just the chance of a passing shower in northern and central Jersey around daybreak this morning or shortly thereafter. We should have some clouds breaking with sunshine and a brisk wind. As I said, temperatures will be perhaps in the low 70s this afternoon with no sea breeze. today as far as I can tell.

Now, there may be a disturbance coming through later tonight or first thing early Tuesday morning with just the chance of a light shower or sprinkle toward daybreak Tuesday morning. Otherwise, clouds and some sunshine tomorrow with temperatures in the upper 60s to perhaps the low 70s.

Then, a storm system coming out of Yucatan Peninsula in the southern Gulf of Mexico will tie up with a cold front and bring some pretty good rain and wind here for Wednesday later this week.

Friday, October 14, 2011

Alan's Weekend Weather - 10/14/11

The normal high temperature for New Jersey now is 66 to 68. We were just about in that ballpark yesterday; Trenton 66, Atlantic City, and Wrightstown, Burlington County were 68.

Today will be in the 70s, despite the fact that we'll have some occasional showers moving through at any time. And there could be some heavy downpours, especially this afternoon and early this evening.

But by early this evening, the shower threat will be ending, and it should be clear overnight. Low will be in the mid 40s to lower 50s, so much cooler.

It will be in the mid to upper 60s Saturday and partly sunny, but it will be a gusty wind. It will feel a little bit cooler than the actual air temperatures will be.

Sun and arriving clouds on Sunday with highs back in the 60s. I'm not mentioning any showers. There's a threat of a shower, I suppose, later in the afternoon or early in the evening in parts of the state northern and central Jersey. But, for the moment I'm keeping it rain free.

So again, some showers moving through today with some highs in the 70s, but cooler near the ocean.

Thursday, October 13, 2011

Alan's Weather - 10/13/11

High temperatures Wednesday did not get out of the 60s, and probably the low to middle 60s, which is just a shade below the normal high of 66 to 68.

Today, we'll have some spotty light rain or drizzle around for a time this morning, here and there, but many of it's cloudy. Variable clouds this afternoon with the chance of a few possible showers with highs of 68 to 74, but cooler along the coast.

Another round of rain will move through tonight, and part of Friday. There's possible late clearing with lows tonight mostly in the 60s. Highs Friday back in the 70s, but a bit cooler tomorrow near the ocean.

The weekend should be okay. We should have some sunshine with a brisk wind on Saturday with highs mainly in the mid to upper 60s.

Partly sunny Sunday with highs also in the 60s. A disturbance coming by to our north may produce a few spotty showers far in upstate New York later Sunday afternoon, but not in New Jersey for Sunday.

Wednesday, October 12, 2011

Alan's Weather - 10/12/11

High Temperatures yesterday ranged from 72 in Atlantic City to 77 at Newark Liberty Airport. 67 or 68 is the normal high temperature, so we were above normal any way you slice it.

Today, we'll be near or even a bit below normal with temperatures mainly in the 60s. There will be some areas of rain, mainly in southern and western counties this morning. Those will spread into central and northern New Jersey during the course of the afternoon.

And we'll have some rain around in the nighttime hours ahead with temperatures still mainly in the 60s with a few upper 50s. There will be some areas of fog to watch for later tonight.

Dampness and fog to start tomorrow, then variable clouds. There's still the chance of a shower, though. Thursday's highs will be back in the 70s, but a bit cooler tomorrow near the ocean.

Showers and fog are likely Friday morning, then partly sunny in the afternoon with some luck. Friday's highs in the 70s.

It'll be windy and cooler, but okay for Saturday.

And Sunday should be okay as well.

Tuesday, October 11, 2011

Alan's Weather - 10/11/11

Sky's will be mostly cloudy today. Now, there will certainly be some sunshine through the high cloud during the first half of the day. It may tend to become mostly cloudy this afternoon with some highs in the low to mid 70s, but a bit cooler than that near the ocean.

Some light rain arrives in parts of the state late tonight and during the early morning hours. Lows in the mid 50s to the lower 60s, but upper 60s along the south coast.

A wet and chilly day tomorrow with a brisk wind off the ocean and highs just into the 60s. It wouldn't be a surprise if there were a few 50s, especially in the northern and westernmost counties for highs tomorrow. So, a cool, wet Wednesday coming up.

Cloudy and damp to start early Thursday with some clouds and sun during the course of the day. Highs back in the 70s. There may be a shower late in the day or at night.

And then hopefully Friday and the upcoming weekend looks okay from here.

Monday, October 10, 2011

Alan's Weather - 10/10/11

High temperatures this weekend reached the upper 70s and low 80s for Saturday, and reached the middle to upper 80s yesterday, which was even higher than we predicted. Newark broke a record set in 1990 of 87 as it reached 88 there. Trenton-Mercer County Airport tied a record of 86 set all the way back in 1939. It was cooler 70s along the beach and boardwalk with a sea breeze yesterday.

Today we'll have sea breezes at the beaches and the temperatures will be right back into the 80s this afternoon. It'll be in the 70s to near 80s near the water with lots of sunshine and reasonably low humidity.

Tonight we'll have some high clouds and some partially clear skies. And we'll some high clouds which will sort of thicken up during the day Tuesday, and maybe become partly to mostly cloudy by late morning or afternoon. And then we'll have some rain and showers.

Now, the GFS forecast model wants to have some showers developing here by as early as later tomorrow night. I think that might be a little bit on the fast side, so I'm probably indicating the first chance of some rain or showers will be late Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning in southernmost New Jersey, and then gradually moving through New Jersey pretty quickly on Wednesday.

Wednesday looks pretty wet around here with temperatures in some cases no better than the 60s with a brisk wind off the ocean.

We may come out of a bit on Thursday. We'll have more to say about that in future reports.

Friday, October 7, 2011

Alan's Weekend Weather - 10/07/11

High temperatures Thursday reached around or just a shade over 70; 71 at Newark Liberty Airport, 70 in Atlantic City, 69 Trenton and Wrightstown, Burlington County.

Today will be around 70 with lots of sunshine. It will be cooler near the ocean for the first time in days as a sea breeze springs up.

Tonight will be clear and chilly again with 40s, even a few 30s possible in the coolest spots, and some 50s in urban and coastal areas.

Lots of sunshine for the weekend, which will linger into Monday of next week, and perhaps even into Tuesday. I don't see any rain or showers until the middle of next week, say about Wednesday or so of next week.

Sunshine on Saturday and Sunday. Middle to perhaps upper 70s tomorrow, and upper 70s to low 80s for Sunday. It'll be cooler both days at the beaches.

Philippe is the storm that's still moving northeast towards the middle of the central Atlantic Ocean, and will be dying a slow death in the many many days ahead.

Have a great weekend.

Thursday, October 6, 2011

Alan's Weather 10/06/11

Yesterday, I thought 73 or 74 would do it for the high temperature, and it did at Wrightstown and Trenton, but it did reach 75 in Atlantic City and at Newark Liberty Airport as well. So I was pretty close on the number.

Today will mostly be in the upper 60s with sunshine. There should be just enough of a north-northwest breeze to hold off the sea breeze for the most part today.

Tonight will be clear with temperatures back in the 40s, even a few 30s in the coolest spots again, and lower mid 50s in urban and coastal areas.

And pretty simple forecast: Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, in fact right into the early part of next week, will have lots of sunshine. High Friday afternoon near 70, mid to perhaps upper 70s Saturday, and 78-82 Sunday. It'll be cooler all three days near the beach and boardwalk with a sea breeze.

Philippe is turning to the northeast now, but will be dying a slow death as it eventually turns into colder Atlantic waters, and becomes a tropical storm in the many days ahead.

Wednesday, October 5, 2011

Alan's Weather - 10/05/11

Boy, we've got some great weather ahead here in New Jersey. It's going to last not only through the work week, but right on through the weekend and early next week. No thoughts of any rain or showers for many days to come, thankfully.

We'll begin with today. It'll be mostly sunny and a milder Wednesday afternoon with highs in the lower 70s, probably in the realm of 73 or 74.

Tonight, clear and chilly again with some lows in the 40s. In fact, even a few 30s are possible in the lowest spots, and low 50s near the ocean.

Sunny tomorrow and sunny Friday with highs tomorrow in the upper 60s, and a bit cooler than today. It'll be near 70 or so Friday afternoon. It'll probably turn cooler each of the afternoons along the coast with a sea breeze.

The weekend will be filled with sunshine. Low to perhaps mid 70s Saturday, and upper 70s pushing 80 Sunday. Again, it'll be cooler near the beach and boardwalk with a sea breeze both Saturday and Sunday afternoon.

Tuesday, October 4, 2011

Alan's Weather - 10/04/11

I predicted near 60 yesterday. That worked out with a scattering of showers, also as predicted.

There's the chance of a shower or two around, I suppose, but otherwise sunshine and some clouds with highs in the milder 60s, and probably the mid-60s or so this afternoon.

It should be mainly clear tonight with some lows in the 40s, but low or mid 50s in the big cities and along the beach and boardwalk.

Sunny tomorrow with a brisk wind with highs in the mild or low 70s; 71, 72 may be the way to go.

It'll be sunny again Thursday, but maybe a touch cooler. For some reason, Guidance only wants to have upper 60s, so that's the way I went for highs Thursday afternoon.

Friday, Saturday, and Sunday look excellent from here. I don't see any reason not to pick really nice weather for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. It should be in the 70s this weekend, and perhaps even pushing 80 degrees by the time we get to Sunday just away from the ocean.

Felipe is still hanging in there as a tropical storm, almost a hurricane now. It's going to be shifting from west to the northeast direction farther out to sea in the days ahead.

Monday, October 3, 2011

Alan's Weather - 10/03/11

The weekend forecast worked out reasonably well. We had times of clouds and sunshine, and also the risks of some scattered showers that were mentioned in the forecast either day. And that worked out in parts of the state, but not all.

Temperatures on Sunday, by the way, except for Newark-65, got barely above 60 or 61. It was only 59 Sunday in Wrightstown, Burlington County.

Well, temperatures today will be mostly in the 50s to the perhaps low 60s, or just a shade over 60 with more clouds than sun for our Monday. There is the risk of some scattered showers at any time. Those scattered showers will be planning until at the least the first half of the night before tapering off, especially in central and south Jersey later at night.

Tuesday will offer more clouds than just some sunshine, and also the risk of some scattered showers. Although, the shower activity may not be as widespread Tuesday as it will be today.

Wednesday will have a brisk north-northwest wind with more in the way of sunshine returning. Temperatures Wednesday could be up to near 70 degrees in afternoon.

Friday, September 30, 2011

Alan's Weekend Weather - 09/30/11

We'll start with sunshine today and then see some developing clouds later this morning. If not then, during the afternoon. During the afternoon hours, there's the chance a few showers or sprinkles may pop up with highs in the upper 70s to near 80, but cooler along the coast with a sea breeze.

Now, some showers may move through during the night ahead. Friday night lows in the chillier 50s, but maybe 60 or so in the far south coast.

More clouds and sun for Saturday with still the chance of a few showers at any time with highs from just 58 to 63. Whether or not you can get in a golf game or any outdoor activities tomorrow remains to be seen. Certainly it's a possibility, but you have to include the chance of a few showers anytime tomorrow.

Sunday, we'll have clouds and some sun with still the risk of a few showers, at least in parts of the state. Sunday's highs may only be in 50s, but near 60 or so at best.

We have two tropical weather systems, Felipe, which is hanging on, but Ophelia is becoming a very strong hurricane. It may pass over Bermuda in the next day or two before it heads out into the North Atlantic.

Thursday, September 29, 2011

Alan's Weather - 09/29/11

We still have the risk of some passing showers today. Earlier, we've seen downpours again in portions of Hunterdon, Warren, and Sussex County. Almost the same kind of line of showers in the same place as 24 hours ago.

But, other parts of the state may have a passing shower or two. Otherwise, variable clouds and some sun today with a few highs around or just a bit over 80, but cooler 70s along the coast.

Any early evening showers will end. Then becoming mostly clear overnight with some lows in the 50s, but low to mid 60s urban and coastal areas.

Some sun and clouds Friday with just the chance of a shower. Hopefully, it will be a dry day for a change with temperatures just in the 70s.

Much cooler this weekend as we look for clouds and some sun Saturday with still the chance of a few showers. Highs Saturday in the low 60s. Partly sunny Sunday with highs again in the low 60s.

Our two tropical weather systems, Ophelia and Felipe, are still milling about in the Atlantic Ocean, but are of no concern to any land areas, such as the Leeward Islands or the east coast of the United States.

We're in fine shape there.

Wednesday, September 28, 2011

Alan's Weather - 09/28/11

A few high temperatures yesterday reached the low 80s; Newark Liberty Airport was 80, while Trenton-Mercer County Airport was the highest one of all at 83. Of course, it was noticeably cooler near the beach and boardwalk.

Today, we've already had a few heavy downpours, and there can be a few showers with that kind of concept moving through during today. With humidity, most highs today in the 70s.

Some showers around tonight and tomorrow. Again, there could be some heavy ones tonight or tomorrow. Rather humid 60s tonight, except near 70s south coast.

And highs Thursday 77 to 82, but cooler again near the water.

We'll have clouds and some sunshine Friday with temperatures mostly in the 70s, although there's still the chance of a shower around.

And I can't rule out an afternoon or evening light shower in a few spots on Saturday and Sunday, especially Saturday. But I want to point out that hopefully most of the upcoming weekend will be alright.

Our two tropical storms are just that, actually one tropical storm to be, Ophelia, will be reclassified as one today. Felipe is continuing on its northwestward-north-northwest track. They will be no concern to the United States at all in the days ahead.

Tuesday, September 27, 2011

Alan's Weather - 09/27/11

High temperatures Monday reached the upper 70s and low 80s; low 80s in Newark, Trenton, and Wrightstown, Burlington County. That's almost 9 or 10 degrees above the normal high of 72 or 73.

Today, we'll have clouds and some sunshine after early fog gets out of the way. There's still the chance of a shower late, especially near the Delaware River, but most of the state today will be okay. Some highs of 78 to 82, but cooler along the coast.

And some showers should move through the night with areas of fog again with some lows back in the 60s, but 70 or so south coast.

Some showers still seem likely during the course of Wednesday with highs back in the 70s.

And some showers still moving through Thursday with a few highs around 80 or close to it, but cooler again Thursday near the ocean.

As we head into Friday, we should start to dry out and improve, and turn cooler. And that cooling trend should be lasting into the upcoming weekend. I suppose a sprinkle can't be ruled out in the afternoon or evening hours this weekend. For the most part, though, it should be dry. And that is certainly welcome.

Monday, September 26, 2011

A Look Ahead at the Week

The weekend forecast turned out much better than expected. We had little to no rain for the entire weekend. Temperatures by Sunday reached the upper 70's and low 80's away from the ocean. A normal high of 73 or 74, so we were quite a bit above that, at least away from the ocean.

Today, we'll have clouds and some intervals of sunshine. It doesn't look like there will be chance of any shower activity. If there is it will be in far southern counties.

Some fog and low clouds will return for the nighttime hours ahead.

Tuesday offers the risk of a shower, especially in the afternoon and evening, in parts of the state. Tuesday night into Wednesday looks to feature more in the way of rain and showers. However after what happened over the weekend, we may be a little bit conservative on that note.

The tropics are active but not anything of concern here. Ophelia is no longer a disturbance.

Friday, September 23, 2011

Flooding Risks Ahead as Jersey Gets More Rain

High temperatures yesterday were close to my 80 degree forecast. It reached 81 in Newark and Atlantic City. In Trenton, it was 82. The normal high for this time period is about 74 degrees.

Today will be mostly in the 70's because some rain will develop, and it could become heavy at times this afternoon and this evening. There's a floodwatch in effect for today and Saturday for the entire state. One to three inches of rain is expected to fall, perhaps a bit more in spots. That could cause some flooding concerns, especially on highways and smaller streams and creeks.

Rain and showers will be moving through during the night ahead. Statewide lows from the mid 60s to 70s.

Of the two weekend days, Saturday will see the most rain. I'm not sure if there will be much rain around Sunday during the day. Weekend highs upper 70s to perhaps 80, cooler near the ocean.

Ophelia is barley hanging on as a Tropical Storm, and will probably not strengthen much. It's possible it will weaken some in the days ahead.

Have a good weekend!

Thursday, September 22, 2011

The Rain Continues

We'll watch today for the chance of a few showers. Otherwise, variable clouds with breaks of sun possible. A few highs near 80, but cooler near the ocean.

There's a chance of a few showers tonight. Statewide lows from the mid 60's to the low 70's. We have a flood watch back in effect from later Friday into the weekend for much of South, Central and Northen New Jersey. It's going to be one to three inches of rain, maybe four when all is said and done.

Rain is also likely tomorrow, heavy at times. Highs just in the 70's.

Showers will still be around this weekend, especially Saturday. Weekend highs upper 70's to perhaps 80. Still cooler along the coast.

We have Tropical Storm Ophelia to watch for. It's pretty much holding its own with 55 to 60 miles per hour sustained winds. It may weaken a little bit in the days ahead.

Tuesday, September 20, 2011

Threat of Showers Most of the Week

There's the chance of a shower in parts of the state today. Otherwise variable clouds with some sun. Highs in the 70's, but a bit cooler along the coast with a wind off the water. I think most of the night in most places should be rain free. Partly to mostly cloudy, with 50's to 60's.

Showers will be developing during Wednesday though, with highs back in the 70's. More humid Thursday with still the risk of a few showers back in the 70's, but cooler near the ocean. Actually it looks like there's the chance of at least a few off and showers for Friday, into the upcoming weekend.

In the tropics we have a disturbance that show signs of organization, and could become the next tropical depression. It's a bit early to say though if that will happen.

Monday, September 19, 2011

Alan's Weather - 09/19/11

The weekend forecast worked out reasonably well. High temperatures yesterday only reached the upper 60s to around 70. The normal high is around 76 or 77, so we were a little bit below that. Of course, we had lots of clouds and just some sunshine.

Well today, we are looking for variable clouds and some sunshine, but it should be rain-free. Temperatures will be in the upper 60s to low 70s, but coolest near the ocean with a wind off the water.

Showers will be approaching by daybreak Tuesday morning in parts of the state, at least central and northern New Jersey. I'm not sure there will be very much in southern counties to start with tomorrow morning.

But there will be the risk of a few passing showers during the course of Tuesday with high temperatures in the low or middle 70s. Again cooler near the ocean.

Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday look to feature at least some semblance of unsettled weather. That is clouds, some sunshine, and still the risk of a shower.

Nothing too much going on in the Tropics. One disturbance well east of the Windward Islands needs to be monitored for signs of development.

Friday, September 16, 2011

Alan's Weekend Weather - 09/16/11

Mets losing again. Well, what can I say? I'm a Mets fan. I'm doomed to failure.

Anyway, partly to mostly sunny and cool today with temps just in the 60s in New Jersey, but mid to upper 60s this afternoon.

Now, it may become partly cloudy tonight with some lows in the 40s and low 50s urban and coastal areas.

Clouds and just some sun tomorrow with upper 60s at best, and just a bit cooler near the ocean with a brisk wind off the water.

Some clouds may be around Sunday near 70 or so. Actually, there may be some rain or showers that we'll be flirting with on the far south coast this weekend, but I think basically it'll be rain free. Saturday and Sunday may have more clouds than sunshine both days.

As we look at Hurricane Maria, which will be moving past and over the southeastern corner of Newfoundland in the next 12 to 18 hours, it'll become extra tropical. Still though, it'll get a pretty good blow up there from an 80 MPH hurricane as it moves across the southeastern corner of the Canadian Maritime Provinces.

Have a good week everybody. See you Monday.

Thursday, September 15, 2011

Alan's Weather - 09/15/11

High temperatures yesterday reached the upper 80s to near 90; 90 at the Robert Miller Air park in the Pine Barrens of Ocean County, and 88 in Atlantic City and Newark for highs. It was cooler near the ocean with a wind off the water.

Warm to start today, warmer than I thought for a while with showers moving through, but windy and much much cooler by late today with temperatures by this evening probably settling into the cooler 60s.

It'll be down into the 40s tomorrow morning and clear and chilly with low to mid 50s in urban and coastal areas.

Quite cool Friday with sunshine and patchy clouds. Highs Friday just in the 60s.

And it'll be clouds and some sunshine on Saturday. We'll call it partly cloudy with a brisk wind and highs only in the 60s.

Sun and clouds on Sunday with temps near 70 or so at best.

Maria will be rocketing past New Jersey in the next 12 to 24 hours producing some swells with its 65 MPH winds. But that's all. It's no concern to us at all, other than the waves in the ocean over the next day or two.

Wednesday, September 14, 2011

Alan's Weather - 09/14/11

High temperatures yesterday reached 85 or 86. Atlantic City Airport reached 85, and Newark Liberty Airport reached 86, which was above the normal high of 78 by a fair degree.

Temperatures today will be in the middle to upper 80s, but cooler near the beach and boardwalk with some sunshine. Now, there is some suggestion again that there might be a shower chance, mostly near the Delaware River in South Jersey and northwestern counties by late this afternoon or this evening. I think that's pushing the envelope. I think the threat of any showers across the state will wait until later tonight.

Certainly, Thursday looks to feature clouds with just intervals of sun or brightening skies, and the risk of passing showers anytime, possibly thunderstorms. Temperatures will start to cool off tomorrow, starting out perhaps in the 70s, and then falling into the 60s in the afternoon with a northwest wind.

It's going to be quite cool for Friday with some sunshine and some patchy clouds, and temperatures that might not be out of the 60s for highs on Friday.

And over the weekend, a similar kind of weather pattern will hold up, though it should be rain free.

Alan's Weather - 09/13/11

Monday's high temperatures reached the low 80s as expected; 83 in Newark and Atlantic City. The normal high for New Jersey now is 78, so we were a little bit above the seasonal average yesterday.

Today's highs will be in the low to middle 80s with mostly sunny skies and moderate humidity. It'll be in the cooler 70s along the coast. It will be a very nice day, no question about it.

And we'll have some clear skies tonight with some lows in the 60s, maybe a few 50s in the coolest spots, and around 70 near the ocean.

Some sunshine Wednesday back in the 80s, but a bit cooler along the coast. I've taken out the mention of any showers for Wednesday evening and Wednesday night. Instead, I've pushed them back to Thursday.

There's the chance of a few showers Thursday under a partly cloudy sky with highs just in the 70s.

Maria is still a tropical storm heading very slowly toward the northwest. It'll turn north-northwest to north and eventually east in the many days ahead. It'll take a track very similar to what Katia did, passing many hundred miles east of New Jersey in the days ahead.

Monday, September 12, 2011

Alan's Weather - 09/12/11

The weekend forecast turned out reasonably close to what we predicted. We predicted clouds and some sunshine with a shower and thunderstorm chance. That was certainly true of Sunday in spots. And Saturday it reached 87 in Atlantic City; 80 yesterday there, although it was in the low to middle 70s elsewhere Sunday.

Well today, we are looking for clouds and some sunshine and temperatures that will be in the lower 80s or so for highs this afternoon, but a bit cooler near the water. There is the chance of perhaps a shower or an isolated thunderstorm popping up in just a few spots. I'm not sure that it'll be very much in the way of activity today.

It may last into the first part of the night in some parts of the state-Central and South Jersey especially. And then we'll get clearing skies overnight, and cooler and drier weather will come in for the next couple of days.

As we look at the tropics, we have Maria, which is going to be turning northwest and north, passing mid-way between Cape Hatteras and Bermuda. That's the track that Katia took not too long ago. That's probably what Maria will take in the many days ahead. Surf will build here in New Jersey in the days ahead, but that's about it.

And that's about it for now. More weather coming along tomorrow.

Alan's Weekend Weather - 09/09/11

Thursday's high temperature reached near 80 at Newark Liberty Airport. Everybody else was in the mid to upper 70s as expected with some showers around, especially near the Delaware River.

Now today, we'll have clouds and some sunshine with humidity. There's the chance of a shower or thunderstorm today, especially near the Delaware River. I'm not sure it's going to be pop up near anywhere else, but we'll see. A few highs in the lower 80s, but cooler along the coast.

Katia will be moving away off-shore 400 miles or better from New Jersey today, and will be producing some high surf and dangerous rip currents today, as well.

Now, there's the better for a few showers or a thunderstorm for overnight with most lows in the 60s.

And it'll be cloudy to partly sunny Saturday with still the chance of a shower or thunderstorm either day. Lower 80s Saturday and 70s to perhaps 80 Sunday, but it'll be cooler both weekend days near the ocean.

Thursday, September 8, 2011

Alan's Weather- 09/08/11

We have not one, not two, but three tropical weather systems going. We have Nate in the southernmost Gulf of Mexico and the Bay of Campeche. We have Katia, which is about 300 miles west of Bermuda between the US east coast and Bermuda, passing northbound. And we have Maria, which is east of the Leeward Islands speeding along with 50 MPH winds.

Anyway, Maria is the most interest to us because Katia is going to be passing many hundreds of miles to the east of New Jersey tomorrow, and will just be producing large swells we'll be seeing today and again Friday. Maria, though, could be a little bit more of an interesting story in the many days ahead.

Until then, some showers and even a thunderstorm is moving through today. Parts of the state, not all, may get some heavy downpours. Highs in the lower 80s, and cooler 70s near the ocean.

Any showers around tonight may tend to taper off in some spots with lows in the 60s to low 70s.

Tomorrow still humid with clouds and some sunshine with the chance of another shower or thunderstorm Friday with highs in the low to middle 80s, but cooler again at the beaches.

Some sunshine this weekend, but still the risk of another shower or thunderstorm, especially Saturday. Weekend highs in the 80s, but cooler this weekend near the ocean.

Wednesday, September 7, 2011

Alan's Weather - 09/07/11

Hurricane Katia is about 800 miles to the south-southeast of Cape May and has weakened to a Category 1 hurricane with only 90 mile an hour winds. It's still a powerful storm, and it's going to create large swells by tomorrow, and especially Friday along the Jersey shore as it passes probably 350 to 400 miles east of the Jersey shore during the course of the day Friday.

For us, we have some light or drizzle around today, but a few heavier showers are certainly possible. We're seeing that already in some of the western counties near the Delaware River. Some highs just in the 70s, but cooler along the coast with a brisk wind.

Some rain or showers still seem likely for tonight and tomorrow. Low tonight 62 to 72 statewide, and highs tomorrow mostly in the 70s.

Clouds and finally some sunshine Friday, but it still may shower. Highs Friday 77 to 82, but cooler again near the ocean.

Hopefully the weekend will turn out to be okay, although we're not quite sure about that just yet.

Alan Returns- 09/06/11

The long holiday weekend worked out reasonably well. There were some showers scattered around yesterday for Labor Day.

Today we'll have some rain moving through during the day and tonight, and some heavy downpours are certainly possible. The moisture comes from a tropical storm that was once named Lee interacting with a weather boundary headed towards New Jersey. Highs today upper 60s to mid 70s. Lows tonight in the 60s, except near 70 along the south coast.

Occasional showers still seem likely for Wednesday with highs back in the 70s, but cooler by a little bit near the beaches.

And some showers are still possible, believe it or not for Thursday, with highs in the low 80s, but 70s near the ocean.

Speaking of near the ocean, we have powerful Hurricane Katia, which is moving northwest, and will be passing mid-way between Bermuda and the North Carolina coast in a couple of days time. It'll certainly make the ocean very rough with large swells coming in time, and making dangerous rip currents and the like.

That's the only impact we expect unless there is a last minute surprise change in the track. We expect it to pass many hundreds of miles east of New Jersey on it's track northeastward out to sea in the many days ahead.

That's it for now. More weather coming along tomorrow.

Alan's Weather Blog On Vacation

Alan will be on vacation until September 6th. His blog returns on that day!

Wednesday, August 31, 2011

Alan's Pre-Vacation Blog 08/31/11

Some great weather lies ahead, but first a word about yesterday. We predicted lower 80s, maybe 83 or 84. That is what we got to- Newark 84, Trenton 83, so I was happy with that forecast. It was, of course, cooler near the water.

Today, it's pretty similar. Mostly sunny with low humidity once again with highs 83 to 87, so a little bit warmer, especially near Newark, but cooler 70s at the beaches.

Mainly clear and fairly comfortable tonight back in the 50s for some, and mid 60s or so urban and coastal areas.

And I've taken the slight chance of a shower out of the forecast Thursday. I'm mentioning some sunshine now and lower 80s, but cooler 70s again near the water. It's still reasonably low humidity tomorrow for the fourth day in a row.

It'll be somewhat more humid Friday and partly sunny in the low 80s, but cooler at the beaches. There may be a few showers for Friday night.

Now, most of Saturday looks okay from here. I think a shower or thunderstorm chance holds off until Saturday evening or night, so Saturday daytime should be okay.

There will be a shower or thunderstorm chance for Sunday, and perhaps into early Monday.

Katia is strengthening now and will become a major hurricane in the many days ahead. It will probably not be a major player in East Coast weather, but we'll watch

I'll be off on vacation now through Labor Day. I'll see you next Tuesday.

Alan's Weather- 08/30/11

Upper 70s and low 80s was the way to go yesterday, and that's what turned out. By the way, the normal high temperature is down to 82 now for this time of the year.

A beautiful day today with lots of sunshine and very low humidity again. Highs will be in the low 80s, but it'll be cooler, probably settling into the 70s at the beaches with the wind off the water.

Clear and still fairly comfortable for the night upcoming with some lows back in the 50s, but mid 60s in urban and coastal areas.

Mostly sunny tomorrow and still pleasant with a Wednesday high in the mid 80s, but still cooler along the coast.

A mix of sun and clouds for Thursday with just the chance of a shower and low 80s away from the ocean.

Friday looks okay, but the weekend, at least Saturday and Sunday, offers the chance of a shower or thunderstorm. Not all the time, but there is the threat of a shower or thunderstorm, especially in the afternoon or evening on Saturday and Sunday. Hopefully it'll be gone for Monday.

And we're watching a tropical depression, almost tropical storm. It'll be moving over the central and eastern Atlantic over these next 3 to 5 days, probably eventually as a major hurricane.

Monday, August 29, 2011

Alan's Weather- 08/29/11

Irene is gone and now it's time to clean-up, although it's going to take the river systems a while to get back to their banks.

Weather-wise, though, it's a beautiful day. Sunshine that may mix with some patchy clouds this afternoon with very pleasant low humidity. Some highs around 80, but cooler at the beach.

Still comfortable tonight with temperatures back in the 50s for many, but low or middle 60s in urban or coastal areas.

Lots of sunshine will continue for both Tuesday and Wednesday with low humidity continuing. Highs tomorrow in the lower 80s and in the mid 80s Wednesday. It'll be cooler both days at the beach and boardwalk.

There may be some arriving clouds Thursday and Friday to mix with some sunshine, but other than that, I think we'll be ok.

And the weekend starts off fine, although there may be showers by the time we get to some point Sunday.

The tropics are still very busy. There is a new tropical depress that's formed south-southwest of the Cape Verde Islands and will become a hurricane in the many days ahead. In fact, in the next 4 or 5 days, it's likely to become a major hurricane.

However, most of the track models, medium-range track models, take it well to the east of the U.S. east coast in a recurving fashion. But it's still a little bit too early to give up on that just yet.

Alan's Hurricane Blog- 08/28/11

It seemed all along to me that the issue was going to be more inland flooding than coastal flooding. Although make no mistake, some oceanfront flooding during the storm has occurred and back bay flooding during the day will be an issue for those residents particularly in Ocean County in spots.

But other than some leftover showers, the steady rain and strong winds are shifting out of the state now. We should actually dry out as we go through this afternoon, but it'll still be windy from the west- 30 to 40 MPH with gusts of 50 MPH certainly quite likely. It's still going to be very windy from the west this afternoon as we slowly dry out in the 70s.

Clear and much more comfortable for the nighttime hours ahead with lows back in the 50s, but lower 60s in some urban and coastal areas.

Partly to mostly sunny and pleasant tomorrow in the 70s to around 80, though it may turn cooler near the ocean for Monday.

And mostly sunny Tuesday with low humidity continuing. Low to mid 80s, but cooler at the beach.

May I say, but doesn't mean it's right, a medium range model European brings a system near the Cape Verde Islands across the Bahamas in about 10 days as a major hurricane.

We'll have to wait and see if that's correct.

Friday, August 26, 2011

Alan's Hurricane Forecast- 08/26/11

A hurricane warning for much of the state today. We'll deal with that in just a second. Warm and humid, though, for Friday with clouds and sun. It may shower with highs in the 80s, but cooler near the ocean.

Some showers around tonight in the humid upper 60s or the low 70s.

Rain tomorrow that will become heavy at times during the course of Saturday afternoon and evening as the wind starts to increase. Highs mainly in the 70s.

The hurricane will probably be just east of Norfolk, Virginia by tomorrow (Saturday) evening at 8PM. If it's that far north already, there's a chance that the storm will be passing us during the course of the day on Sunday. And so, very strong winds and heavy downpours develop Saturday night and Sunday morning.

Winds could reach 40 to 60 MPH with gusts to hurricane force late Saturday night and Sunday morning. We may possibly dry out Sunday afternoon with some strong west winds. The bottom line is, we are going to see a lot of rain that is going to cause major flooding concerns inland. Of course, the other concern is coastal flooding, although the time of high tide along the ocean tomorrow morning is very early, so that may be of some help.

The bays will start to flood over later Sunday in the morning or during the afternoon, so that also causes concern as well.

That's it for now. Have a good weekend.

Alan's Weather- 08/25/11

The main thing to watch for today is the increasing likelihood of some showers and gusty thunderstorms mainly this afternoon, and especially from mid-afternoon into this evening. Highs well into the 80s and cooler at the beaches.

Sun and clouds tomorrow with a shower chance. Some rain or showers are increasing likely for Saturday, then all eyes point to Irene.

Irene is a Category 3 storm, but may yet be a Category 4 hurricane before it gets closer to the Outer Banks of North Carolina by Saturday evening. And then it's going to start to ride up the coast.

Now, one forecast model, the GFDL, which ironically was developed at Princeton, has it traveling inland up the Chesapeake Bay and up Reading, Lancaster, and Harrisburg. If that was the case, we would have heavy rain and strong winds, but not of the magnitude if the storm system moved up the coast.

We think the track of along the coastline or just off-shore will be the way to go. That means very strong winds and heavy rain later Saturday night, and part of Sunday.

With some luck, although the winds will be strong from the west, we may dry out and improve by later Sunday. Stay tuned.

Wednesday, August 24, 2011

Alan's Weather- 08/24/11

High temperatures yesterday reached the low 80s as predicted; 82 in Newark and Atlantic City confirmed that. It was a little bit cooler near the water.

Today will be mostly sunny with still reasonably low humidity and highs in the low to middle 80s, but a bit cooler at the beaches this afternoon.

Tonight, more humid with some lows in the 60s, but low 70s in the big cities and along the shore.

Now, it's going to be humid tomorrow; that's for sure. Watch for showers and gusty thunderstorms mainly tomorrow afternoon and evening. Thursdays highs well into the 80s, but cooler near the ocean. We will be between that system moving out and Irene coming in for the weekend.

Partly cloudy Friday and still humid with a shower possible and highs in the 80s, but cooler at the beaches.

Irene is becoming a major hurricane on its west-northwest track through the Bahamas. It'll be turning northwest and north over the next couple of days. It'll just clip the Outer Banks of eastern North Carolina by probably late Saturday afternoon or Saturday evening/night. Then it's going to be move up along the coast for Sunday.

Now, it may just be possibly moving far enough to the east, although close enough that we will have major impacts here. But, maybe we will be spared the worst if that happens. We can't say that for sure.

More on that tomorrow.

Tuesday, August 23, 2011

Alan's Weather- 08/23/11

High temperatures yesterday reached the upper 70s and low 80s pretty much as we expected with very low humidity. It was a spectacular day.

And mark down another for today with very low humidity and very sunny skies. A few highs will be near 80, though it may turn cooler at the beaches with a possible sea breeze this afternoon.

Tonight will be clear with some lows back in the 50s, but mid 60s or a shade above in urban and coastal areas.

Still fairly pleasant for Wednesday with sunny skies and highs in the low 80s, but cooler near the ocean.

A cool front approaches later Thursday with some sun and arriving clouds. The best chance of a shower or thunderstorm will be Thursday afternoon and evening with highs back in the 80s, but cooler at the beach.

And Friday looks okay from here. Then our attention will be turned toward the track of Hurricane Irene.

There seems little doubt that the hurricane is going to strike the North Carolina coastline somewhere as far west as Wilmington or as far east as Cape Hatteras. It will then move north-northeast up along or just off the east coast close to enough New Jersey by Sunday and Sunday night to possibly cause some real problems here.

Stay tuned.

Monday, August 22, 2011

Alan's Weather- 08/22/11

The weekend forecast worked out pretty well, although the shower and thunderstorm threat was Sunday and not at all on Saturday. Of course, we had a severe thunderstorm watch that was put up in the middle of the afternoon yesterday through the early part of the nighttime hours yesterday.

Speaking of yesterday, mid to upper 80s was the highest temperatures that we had. 87 at Newark Liberty Airport was the highest temperature that we saw yesterday. And there was a half an inch of rain. I'm sure locally there was heavier amounts in some of those thunderstorms that were scattered around the state yesterday.

Today, after the patchy early morning fog gets out of the way, we'll have some sunshine and a fair amount of it. We'll have enough northwest wind to notice. Some temperatures will be no better than the low to middle 80s, perhaps lower in some spots. Tonight, down to the 50s and 60s.

Only near 80 tomorrow with lots of sunshine, and some sunshine, lots of it, with temperatures no better than the low 80s for Wednesday.

We have to be keeping a careful eye on Irene. It'll be flirting with Puerto Rico on the northern coast of the Dominican Republic over the next 24 hours. After that, it'll turn northwest and north, and could be a threat to not only the southeast coast, but perhaps up this far north. We'll have to keep an eye on it in the many days ahead.

Friday, August 19, 2011

Alan's Weekend Weather- 08/19/11

High temperatures Thursday reached 85 or 86, a degree or two below what I anticipated, but that's not too bad.

And today, we'll have a heavy shower or thunderstorm threat at any time. We've already had some in central and south Jersey. It can happen in any part of the state. Otherwise, clouds and some sunshine with highs back in the 80s today, but a bit cooler at the beaches.

A shower or thunderstorm is possible in the first part of the night until midnight or shortly there after. Then partly cloudy late tonight with some lows in the 60s but low 70s or so in urban and coastal areas.

It'll be humid this weekend with clouds and some sunshine. There's still the chance of a shower or thunderstorm either day. Not that it can't happen Saturday, but Sunday may have the better likelihood of that. Weekend highs in the 80s, but somewhat cooler near the ocean.

We have a tropical depression on the verge of becoming a tropical storm in the Caribbean Sea, but it's going to be becoming inland before it can develop much. And a disturbance out in the far eastern Atlantic must be watched for signs of development in the many days ahead. That could threaten the Bahamas, Florida, or southeast coast by later next weekend.

Have a great weekend!

Thursday, August 18, 2011

Alan's Weather- 08/18/11

There have already been a few passing showers and a thunderstorm. There will be the chance of a few more during the course of the day today. Otherwise, a mix of sunshine and some clouds with highs well into the 80s, but a bit cooler at the beach.

There's still the chance of a shower, especially near the Delaware River in a few spots early tonight, but most of the night will just be partly cloudy with some lows in the lower 60s and low 70s in the big cities and along the shore.

More humid Friday with a shower or thunderstorm possible at any time. Friday's highs in the 80s, but cooler again near the ocean.

And the weekend, unfortunately, there's the chance of a shower or thunderstorm either day. Otherwise, clouds and some sunshine and it will not be raining by any means, all the time on Saturday and Sunday. The weekends highs in the 80s, but a bit cooler at the beaches.

Tropics are becoming increasingly active. We have a disturbance in the central Caribbean Sea moving westward. It could be coming into a depression stage in the next 24 hours. A system that's well off the African coast needs to be monitored for signs of development. That could be a player in our weather by later next weekend, if it does finally develop.

Wednesday, August 17, 2011

Alan's Weather- 08/17/11

We had a scattering of showers yesterday, but surprisingly, temperatures made it over 80 degrees in just a couple of spots- Atlantic City and Trenton reached 81, while everybody else was in the upper 70s.

Today, a beautiful day and pretty warm, well into the 80s and upper 80s with reasonably low humidity and cooler at the beaches with a sea breeze.

Some clear skies tonight, then some late clouds with lows around the 60s, and maybe 70 or so in urban and coastal areas.

Looks like we are going to get more rain and showers in the forecast for the next couple of days. What else is new? Variable clouds Thursday with some showers and even a thunderstorm possible moving through with highs in the lower 80s, but cooler near the ocean.

More of the same on Friday with still chance of a shower or thunderstorm and highs again in the lower 80s, but cooler at the beaches.

Saturday looks okay, for now. Most of Sunday does, although some showers may be approaching by late in the day.

The Tropics are still on the active side as a system in the central Caribbean Sea will have to be watched. And eventually, something coming off the Cape Verde Islands will have to be watched in the many days ahead.

Tuesday, August 16, 2011

Alan's Weather- 08/16/11

Monday's high temperatures reached as warm as 83 in Atlantic City, but my upper 70s and low 80s worked out after all. There was the scattering of showers and thunderstorms still present particularly in parts of central and northern New Jersey, but south Jersey had some storms in Cape May County.

Today, we'll have clouds and breaks of sunshine, but also still the chance of a few showers or a thunderstorm with most highs in the 70s, though I suppose it could 80 in far south New Jersey. But, it'll be 70s for the most part.

Then better weather ahead, becoming clear and more comfortable tonight with some lows of 57 to 62, but middle to upper 60s in urban and coastal areas.

Sunny tomorrow, a beautiful day, with modest humidity and temperatures well into the 80s, but cooler at the beaches.

The next weather system approaches Thursday late in the day with the chance of a shower or a thunderstorm later in the afternoon or evening especially. Clouds and some sunshine before then in the 80s, but cooler Thursday near the ocean.

As we look at the Tropics, of course we have Girth that is speeding away from Bermuda. We have a tropical wave in the eastern Caribbean that needs to be watched in the next few day. There is also something coming off the African coast, as well.

Monday, August 15, 2011

Alan's Weather - 08/15/11

The weekend turned out pretty much as expected on Saturday, although there was some increasing clouds during the afternoon with sunshine fading. It was a pretty nice day, but Sunday was one for the record books. Some incredible amounts of rain fell across the Garden State yesterday.

For example, in Burlington County, Mount Holly had 3 inches, but that was paltry in comparison to what other locations had. Blackwood, Camden County had over 5 inches. Mullica in Gloucester County had just short of 9 inches. Lawrenceville, Mercer County had over 5 inches. Carteret, Middlesex County had a little over 6 inches. Aberdeen Township in Monmouth County had just short of 5 inches. And Elmer, I think might be the winner in Salem County with just under 10 inches of rain.

Yet, by the same token, the south coast, the far south coast near Atlantic City only received about 1/3rd of an inch of rain.

Today, some showers and thunderstorms will be around with temperatures in the upper 70s to perhaps low 80s.

And the threat of a few showers will be around tonight tomorrow, and we should finally dry out by Wednesday.

Friday, August 12, 2011

Alan's Weekend Weather- 08/12/11

Well, I predicted 85 or 86 yesterday and it just about reached that number with one exception- Atlantic City reached 87. What was a surprise about yesterday was that there was a sea breeze that popped up in the early afternoon because the west wind just about died. I thought it would hold it off, but that was not the case as it was in the 70s at the beaches yesterday afternoon.

We've got some great weather for today and tomorrow, but not for Sunday. Here are the details.

Lots of sunshine today with low humidity once again and highs in the mid to upper 80s, but cooler at the beaches, probably upper 70s or low 80s at best there this afternoon.

Still clear tonight with temps back in the 60s with some 50s in the coolest spots.

And a mostly sunny day again on Saturday. A beautiful day well into the 80s with humidity not bad at all. It's going to be low to moderate, but cooler near the ocean.

It looks as though this storm system is slow and moving. It looks like rain and showers are likely for Sunday, and that may last into early next week, at least Monday. So, we may get some beneficial rains out of the system that's coming in for Sunday and Monday.

Thursday, August 11, 2011

Alan's Weather- 08/11/11

High temperatures Wednesday reached the upper 80s, almost 90- 89 in Atlantic City and Newark Liberty Airport. It was just about as warm at the beaches because there was not any sea breeze as far as I can tell yesterday.

Today, mainly sunny with low humidity and again, probably no sea breeze with highs in the 80s, low to middle 80s this afternoon.

Clear and fairly comfortable tonight with most lows in the 60s, but a few 50s in the coolest spots.

Sunny tomorrow with low humidity continuing and highs back in the 80s, but the sea breeze will return at the beach in late morning and Friday afternoon.

I'm saying sunshine for much of Saturday, although clouds may be slowly increasing especially in the afternoon. I think we'll have some sunshine with highs in the 80s and no threat of rain, but cooler near the ocean Saturday afternoon.

Saturday night, especially the first part of Sunday, looks pretty wet from here. Whether or not it rains all day Sunday or whether the rain and showers tapers off early afternoon and we catch a break after that, remains to be seen.

Wednesday, August 10, 2011

A Mixed Bag Today!

Yesterday's high temperatures reached the mid to upper 80's, just a shade short of 90 degrees. Newark Liberty International Airport had almost three quarters of an inch of rain during the afternoon when the rain came through yesterday.

Today, we'll have a mix of sun and clouds developing. There's a chance of an afternoon shower or thunderstorm, but I'm not sure whether it's going to survive or not. Highs in the 80's with modest humidity.

Becoming clear and less humid tonight. Some lows in the low 60's, even a few 50's are possible in a few spots.

Partly to mostly sunny tomorrow. Temperatures will be comfortable. Low humidity. Highs in the middle 80's.

Looks like it will be mostly sunny and still pleasant Friday. Highs in the 80's, a bit cooler at the beaches.

Saturday looks to offer some sunshine to start, and then clouds increasing. Hopefully showers hold off until late in the day.

Sunday looks to be a wet one. Possible thunderstorm as well.

Tuesday, August 9, 2011

Alan's Weather- 08/09/11

It reached the lower 90s yesterday; 92 or 93 in spots, although it was cooler near the water. There was an isolated passing shower in a few spots yesterday, but most places didn't see very much.

Today, it's a different story. We start dry, but by late morning and early afternoon near the Delaware River and elsewhere this afternoon and early this evening, watch for some shower and thunderstorm activity. A few highs could be near 90 briefly, and it'll be cooler near the beach and boardwalk regardless.

It looks as though the first half of the night, the first part of the night, will be wet. Some showers and possibly a leftover thunderstorm may be moving through.

Then it should move out between midnight and morning. In fact, I think we'll get some clearing during the early morning hours after midnight tonight with lows in the mid 60s to mid 70s; 65-75.

Partly sunny tomorrow and still pretty warm near 90 with just the chance of an afternoon or evening thunderstorm tomorrow.

And then some great weather Thursday and Friday. Starting with Thursday, partly to mostly sunny with comfortable temperatures and low humidity. Thursday's highs in the lower 80s.

Monday, August 8, 2011

Alan's Weather 08/08/11

The weekend forecast worked out reasonably well, although it was a few degrees hotter than I expected on Sunday- 93,94 in Atlantic City and Newark versus the around 90 or so that I had predicted.

Well, today we're looking for some sunshine with some patchy clouds and enough of a west-northwest wind to hold off any sea breeze. Low 90s, at least, perhaps as high as 94 to 95 in spots. As I said, it'll be near 90 or better along the beaches today. Later this afternoon and this evening there's the chance of a shower or thunderstorm, especially in central and northern New Jersey.

Tuesday starts off with perhaps some early sun, but it's going to become partly to mostly cloudy very quickly. And it looks like increasing chances Tuesday of some shower and thunderstorm activity at any time in the late morning through the afternoon and into the first part, actually, much of Tuesday night.

Wednesday we come out of it with clouds breaking for some sunshine, although another shower or thunderstorm can't be ruled out. It'll be near 90, at least, away from the ocean for Wednesday.

That's the weather for now. More weather coming up tomorrow.

Alan's Weekend Weather- 08/05/11

First, a word about Tropical Storm Emily. It disintegrated into just a plain tropical wave, as it interacted with the mountains of Hispaniola yesterday. It still has the chance to regenerate into a tropical depression or storm, I suppose, as it moves north-northwestward at about 15 miles an hour. But, it will have no impact on the south, east, or Mid-Atlantic coast, as eventually it'll turn north and then northeast, and speed away from the east coast in the many days ahead.

For us here in New Jersey, it looks really nice today. Friday will feature sunshine, patchy clouds with low to middle 80s, but cooler at the beach.

More humid tonight with 60s for some and low 70s urban and coastal areas.

Now, I'm sticking with the idea that there's the chance of a few showers as early as some point Saturday afternoon as it becomes partly to mostly cloudy. The morning will be fine, but by mid and late afternoon, many places will be seeing at least a few showers with low 80s, but cooler at the beach.

Also, an issue with Sunday, I'm mentioning cloudy and damp, wet weather to start. Clouds may break for some sunshine in the afternoon as we dry out. I'm not sure whether or not that's going to work out; stay tuned. Few highs on Sunday could be near 90.

Have a good weekend.

Alan's Weather- 08/04/11

A word about Emily, which is flirting with the south coast of the island of Hispaniola, will cross that island over the next 12 hours or so and weaken. But, assuming the circulation center survives, it'll start to slowly strengthen as moves into the Bahamas over the next couple of days. Eventually, it turns northwest-north-northeast and off-shore. It'll be just far enough off-shore to spare the southeast coast any problems. But, we'll watch.

We'll have our weather condition in New Jersey gradually dry out with clouds breaking for some sunshine this afternoon. Highs in the low 80s, but cooler 70s at the beaches with a wind off the water.

Partly cloudy tonight with statewide lows from 62 to 72, and maybe a few 50s in far northwest New Jersey.

A mix of clouds and some sunshine tomorrow with highs in the lower 80s, but cooler again near the water.

Variable clouds Saturday, not there that can't be any sunshine, but showers will either arrive by Saturday afternoon or hold off till Saturday evening and night. Maybe we'll get much of the day in fine.

And then, damp to start Sunday morning. We may improve Sunday afternoon. Sunday's highs in the 80s, but cooler again near the ocean.

Alan's Weather- 08/03/11

High temperatures yesterday worked out pretty much as expected in the low 90s. It was 92 in Atlantic City, 93 in Newark and Trenton.

Temperatures today, I think now, are going to be reaching the 80s because we have variable clouds, and any showers and thunderstorm activity holds off for the most part until this afternoon and this evening. It'll be cooler near the beach and boardwalk, but I think it'll be in the 80s in most places.

Finally, as this storm system passes by to our south this evening and tonight with more of a east-northeast wind, we'll have some rain moving through. Statewide lows in the mid 60s to lower 70s.

I think it'll start cloudy and damp tomorrow early with maybe some leftover light rain and drizzle. Then clouds may break for some sunshine during tomorrow afternoon with temperatures back in the 80s, but cooler near the ocean.

Friday looks good with partly sunny skies in the 80s again, but cooler again at the beach. There's some question about showers, especially by Saturday night and Sunday. Hopefully, most of Saturday is ok.

Emily is strengthening a bit as it heads towards the island of Ispanola. It'll cross that island in the next 24-36 hours, and then head for the Bahamas. It may come close to Florida, but probably remain off-shore, and probably remain off-shore of the southeastern coast of the United States before turning eastward and out to sea.

Alan's Weather - 08/02/11

It got even warmer than expected yesterday; 98 in Trenton and Newark, 95 in Atlantic City. I thought low to middle 90s, so I wasn't too far off, and it was a bit cooler near the beach and boardwalk with a sea breeze.

Today, I'm predicting mostly sunny skies with somewhat lower humidity and highs in the low 90s or so. I think it'll be near 90 even at the beaches, assuming a northwest wind holds the sea breeze at bay.

It'll be clear for a while tonight and then mostly cloudy later tonight with some lows in the 60s, but lower 70s in urban and coastal areas.

And some rain tomorrow, and much much cooler with a wind off the water and cloud cover. Some highs may actually be held to the 70s for Wednesday.

Early clouds Thursday, then some sunshine returning with highs well into the 80s but cooler at the beaches.

A word about Tropical Storm Emily, which formed overnight. Highest winds are about 40 miles per hour and maybe some slight strenghtening in the next 24 hours. It's about 390 miles southeast of San Juan and will eventually cross over Espanola. I don't know how much will be left of the storm after it crosses the island and gets back into the Atlantic Ocean. That remains to be seen.

Alan's Weather- 08/01/11

Weekend high temperatures were in the low to middle 90s. Yesterday, for example, it reached 95 in Newark and at Trenton-Mercer County Airport. There was some relief as it only reached the low to middle 80s at best, along the beach and boardwalk with a weak sea breeze.

Well, temperatures today will be topping out on the low to middle 90s, perhaps the mid 90s with sunshine. Humidity levels will be moderate, not overall, but certainly not comfortable. There will be an eventual sea breeze along the beach and boardwalk at some point this afternoon and not right away. It should turn southwest to southerly, which means a sea breeze for the shore today.

We'll have some clear skies for a while tonight and temperatures will be in the mid 60s to low 70s.

We look for some sunshine for a while tomorrow with temperatures again in the low 90s with some relief near the water. It looks some showers or thunderstorms will threaten at some point later Tuesday night, and especially on Wednesday.

Wednesday could be wet, at least for a while around here. More weather coming up tomorrow.
